OPGW stands for Optical Fiber Composite Overhead Ground Wire. It is a specialized type of cable that innovatively integrates the traditional overhead ground wire (or shield wire) of high-voltage transmission lines with optical fiber communication units into a single composite structure.
Primary Functions:
1-Grounding & Lightning Protection: Serving as the topmost conductor on transmission line towers, its outer layers, made of aluminum or aluminum alloy wires, function as a conventional ground wire. It provides shielding and protection for the power conductors against lightning strikes.
2-Communication & Monitoring: At its core or within its layers, it houses multiple optical fibers, creating a high-speed, high-capacity telecommunication pathway.
